5 steps from where to go to what to eat.
- Decide when to go β Best Time Guide Β· Rainy Season
- Pick where to stay β Naha Β· Onna Β· Motobu Β· Yomitan
- Get around β rental car required outside Naha
- Eat & drink β try goya, taco rice, awamori
- Beaches & snorkeling β Top 7 Snorkeling Spots Β· Reef-Safe Guide
When I first moved here, I made the mistake of booking a hotel in the north without understanding transport. Most beach towns require a car to reach them within 20β30 minutes. Naha is the exception β walkable, with buses and the monorail β but everyone else should plan on renting from day one. The rainy season hits May through June, and January brings Okinawa’s only reliably cool, dry weather. If you ask locals what to eat, goya and taco rice come up constantly; awamori is the local spirit worth trying at least once.

Wondering when to visit Okinawa? Honest month-by-month breakdown of weather, crowds, prices, and typhoon risk.
Last summer I watched a family show up in July expecting beach weather β they got hit with the tail end of rainy season and spent three days waiting for sun. That’s why the month-by-month guide exists. September and early October can bring typhoons, but November through March is genuinely pleasant. The water warms up by May, though the humidity climbs fast. These guides will help you avoid the same rookie mistakes.
πΊ About Okinawa Insider
Born and raised in Okinawa. I write the kind of travel guide I wish existed when foreigners I met asked me where to go β the honest answer, not the tourist-brochure one. Beaches locals actually visit, weather patterns mainland guides get wrong, and the differences only someone who grew up here would know.
