Kouri Island Day Trip: Drive It or Take the Bus? (2026)

Drive it. A Kouri Island day trip works best with a rental car, because the island’s three payoffs — the bridge approach, Heart Rock at Tinu Beach, and the north-shore coves — sit at opposite ends of an 8 km perimeter road with almost no public transport in between. I’m Daisuke, born and raised in Okinawa (34 years and counting), and I write okinawa-insider.com in English. This guide solves the actual planning problem: whether the bus tour math ever beats driving from Naha, when Heart Rock is even visible, and how to add Churaumi without spending your whole day in a car.

Is a Kouri Island day trip worth it, or is it just a bridge and a rock?

It’s worth half a day, not a full one. Kouri is a roughly circular coral island in Nakijin Village, connected to Yagaji Island by the 1,960-metre Kouri Bridge, which opened in February 2005 and is toll-free. The perimeter road runs about 8 km, so you can drive the whole island in 10 to 15 minutes without stopping. That geography is the honest verdict in one line: the attractions are small, close together, and free to look at.

What you actually get is a shallow reef flat that turns pale green in sunlight, a photogenic bridge approach, a heart-shaped rock formation at Tinu Beach on the north side, and a handful of cafés and shrimp stands. There’s no town, no museum district, no hike longer than a few minutes.

So build Kouri as a 3-to-4-hour block inside a northern Okinawa day, not as the day itself. Pair it with Churaumi Aquarium, Nakijin Castle ruins, or Sesoko Island. If you’re mapping a longer route, my 7-day Okinawa itinerary puts Kouri on day four for a reason: it slots neatly into a Motobu Peninsula loop.

Should I drive to Kouri Island or take a bus tour from Naha?

Two or more people: drive. Solo traveller, or nervous about left-hand driving: take a day bus tour. That’s the whole decision, and it comes down to cost splitting rather than convenience.

A rental car from Naha gives you the two things a coach can’t: you stop where the light is good, and you leave Kouri when you want instead of when the guide says. Against that, you’re driving roughly 90 km each way and paying tolls and parking. A guided coach removes the driving entirely but locks you into a fixed stop of usually 40 to 60 minutes on the island — enough for the bridge and one beach, not for both Heart Rock and lunch.

How long is the drive from Naha, and does the expressway actually save time?

Plan 1 hour 30 minutes from Naha Airport to Kouri Bridge using the Okinawa Expressway, and about 2 hours on ordinary roads. The distance is roughly 90 km either way. Here’s the part most guides skip: the expressway ends at Kyoda IC in Nago, and everything north of there — the run along Route 58, across Yagaji Island, over Kouri Bridge — is ordinary road no matter what you paid. Budget about 40 minutes for that final leg alone.

The Naha IC to Kyoda IC toll is ¥1,040. What that money buys is skipping the traffic lights through Urasoe, Ginowan, and Chatan, which is where Route 58 genuinely bogs down between about 7:30am and 9:30am on weekdays. Leave Naha before 7:00am on a Sunday and toll-free Route 58 costs you maybe 20 extra minutes, plus you get the coastline. Leave at 8:30am on a Tuesday and the expressway is worth every yen.

My preference: expressway northbound to protect your morning light, Route 58 southbound in the afternoon with a stop in Onna. Driving specifics are in my honest guide to renting and driving a car in Okinawa.

Can I reach Kouri Island by public bus without a car?

Technically yes, practically no — not as a day trip. There is no direct public bus from Naha to Kouri Island. The standard chain is highway bus No. 111 from Naha Bus Terminal to Nago Bus Terminal, then the Yagaji Line local bus No. 72 to the Untenbaru Iriguchi stop, which still leaves you roughly 1 km short of the bridge with a taxi ride to finish. Total transit time runs past three hours each way once transfers land badly.

For reference on the first leg, the airport-to-Nago Bus Terminal run takes about 1 hour 45 minutes and was listed at ¥2,230 by visit-okinawa.com as of October 2023. The Yanbaru Express Bus also runs from Naha Airport north toward Unten Port with a connecting island line, but frequencies are low and a missed connection can cost you two hours.

If you’re carless, the sensible answer is a guided coach that already includes Kouri as a stop, like the Hip Hop Bus northern Okinawa day trip. Chasing local timetables to save ¥2,000 is a bad trade on a one-week holiday.

When is the light best on Kouri Bridge, and where do you stop for the photo?

Late morning, roughly 9:00am to 11:30am, with the sun high enough to light the reef flats but before the tour coaches stack up. The water colour on the bridge crossing depends almost entirely on sunlight angle and cloud cover, not on season: the shallow sand-bottomed patches only go pale green when the sun is above about 40 degrees. An overcast 8:00am crossing looks grey no matter how good your camera is.

Stopping on the bridge itself is prohibited. The photo everyone posts is taken from the Yagaji Island side, from the parking area and roadside pull-in at the southern approach, where you get the full span running north. From the Kouri side, the Ocean Tower hill gives the elevated angle, but you’re paying ¥1,000 for it.

For sunset, the west-facing coves near Tokei Beach are better than the bridge, because the bridge points north and you end up shooting into flat light.

How do I time Heart Rock with the tide?

Go within about two hours either side of low tide. Heart Rock sits off Tinu Beach on the north shore of Kouri Island: two rock stacks that read as a heart from the right angle, with a second inverted heart forming in the gap between them. At high tide you’re looking at rocks in water from the sand. At low tide the reef flat drains and you can walk out toward them, which is the shot people actually want.

Check a tide table for the Nago and Motobu area the night before — the Japan Meteorological Agency publishes daily tide predictions for Okinawa ports, and low tide shifts roughly 50 minutes later each day. That’s why generic advice like go in the morning fails half the time: on plenty of days, morning low tide is at 5:00am and the afternoon one at 5:30pm.

Wear shoes you don’t mind soaking. The reef is sharp, slippery in places, and the sandy path down from the parking area gets greasy after rain. Tinu Beach has no showers, and it’s a photo beach rather than a swimming beach.

Where do you park on Kouri Island, and which lots fill first?

Expect paid parking of roughly ¥300-500 per use at the two spots you’ll want, and expect them full by midday in July and August. Kouri Island has no central car park. Parking is scattered: a cluster of lots at the south end near Kouri Beach and the shrimp stands, a private lot at Kouri Ocean Tower for ticket holders, and three small lots serving Tinu Beach — Tokaibaru, Parking Chura, and the original Heart Rock lot, each about a five-minute walk from the sand.

The Tinu Beach lots are the pinch point. They’re small, unpaved in places, and there is no realistic overflow, so on a sunny Saturday in August cars circle the north-shore lane waiting. The south end near the bridge holds more vehicles and turns over faster because people stop for 20 minutes and leave.

Two practical rules. Arrive on the island before 10:00am on weekends and public holidays, and park once rather than moving the car three times — the island is small enough to walk between the bridge-side beach and the cafés. If parking anxiety is your main worry about driving in Okinawa generally, my rental car guide covers the wider parking situation.

Is Kouri Shrimp worth the wait, and what else can you eat on the island?

The garlic shrimp is good, not transcendent, and the wait is the real variable. KOURI SHRIMP (Kouri, Nakijin Village) grew from a single food truck into a multi-floor shop at the south end of the island, serving Hawaiian-style garlic shrimp with rice in four versions: Original, Spicy, Butter, and Spicy & Butter. You order at a touchscreen kiosk and collect at the counter. Listed hours are 11:00-17:00 for dining, with takeaway continuing to around 18:00, and the rooftop terrace looks straight at Kouri Bridge.

Reported spend runs around ¥1,500 a head. Reviews consistently split on wait times, with some visitors reporting quoted waits far shorter than the real thing during the 12:00-14:00 rush.

Alternatives on the island include sea urchin rice bowls in season, which are more genuinely local than garlic shrimp, plus a scattering of cafés and Benny’s açaí bowls next door. My honest take: eat lunch at 11:15am or at 14:30, never at 12:30.

How do I pair Kouri Island with Churaumi Aquarium in one day without rushing?

Do Churaumi first thing, Kouri after lunch — or Kouri first and the aquarium after 15:00. Doing both back-to-back in the middle of the day is what wrecks people’s afternoon, because both sites peak between 11:00 and 14:00.

Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in Motobu opens 8:30-18:30 with last entry at 17:30, and adult admission is ¥2,180 (high school ¥1,440, elementary and junior high ¥710, under 6 free). Allow two to three hours inside. The drive between the aquarium and Kouri Bridge is roughly 25 to 30 minutes via the coastal roads across the Motobu Peninsula.

The late-afternoon version works well: arrive at Kouri around 9:30am, walk Tinu Beach on a morning low tide, eat early, cross back by 13:30, and enter the aquarium around 14:30 when the tour coaches have started leaving. Ocean Expo Park’s dolphin lagoon and turtle pool are free, and parking at the park is free.

Skip Nakijin Castle unless you’re keeping the car until evening. Three paid sites in one day is when the trip starts feeling like homework. More northern pairings sit in my 30 local picks for things to do in Okinawa.

What does a Kouri Island day trip actually cost per person?

For two people sharing a rental car, a Kouri-plus-Churaumi day lands somewhere around ¥6,000-9,000 each, most of it car and admission rather than the island itself. Kouri costs almost nothing to visit: the bridge is toll-free, the beaches charge no entry, and your only fixed island expense is ¥300-500 for parking.

The fixed, checkable numbers as of 2026:

  • Okinawa Expressway, Naha IC to Kyoda IC: ¥1,040 each way for a standard car.
  • Tinu Beach or Kouri Beach parking: about ¥300-500 per use, cash-friendly.
  • Kouri Ocean Tower: ¥1,000 for adults aged 16 and over, ¥500 for ages 6-15, free below elementary age; open 10:00-18:00 with last entry 17:30, tower height 82 m.
  • Churaumi Aquarium: ¥2,180 adult, ¥710 elementary and junior high.
  • Lunch at a shrimp stand: around ¥1,500 a head.

Rental rates swing hard by season, so check live pricing on Okinawa car rental. Solo travellers should compare that total against a single per-person fare on the Hip Hop Bus day trip, where the maths usually flips. If you want the tower view booked in advance, there’s a Kouri Ocean Tower admission ticket online.

What’s Easy to Get Wrong Here

Five mistakes account for most disappointed Kouri visitors, and four of them are timing errors.

  • Turning up at high tide. Heart Rock loses most of its shape once the reef flat floods, and no amount of walking around fixes it.
  • Trying to stop on the bridge. Parking and stopping on Kouri Bridge is prohibited. The viewpoint is the Yagaji Island approach, before you cross.
  • Arriving at 12:30 in August. The Tinu Beach lots are tiny, the shrimp queue is at its longest, and the light is flat overhead.
  • Treating it as a full-day destination. An 8 km island with a 15-minute perimeter drive does not fill eight hours.
  • Assuming buses will sort it out. There’s no direct public bus, and the nearest local stop still needs a taxi.

One more that costs money rather than time: Kouri Ocean Tower is a paid version of a view the island gives you free from the roadside and the beaches. I’d skip it on a clear day and save it for when cloud cover has flattened everything else.

Daisuke’s call: Kouri rewards people who check the tide table and leave by 2pm, and punishes everyone who shows up at noon expecting a full day out.

What I’d Do Differently

If I were rebuilding this half-day from scratch, I’d stop treating the bridge as the destination and treat it as the arrival. Most itineraries — mine included, in earlier drafts — put the bridge photo first and the north shore last, which means you hit Tinu Beach in the early afternoon when parking is worst and the tide is whatever it happens to be. Reversed, it works better: cross early, drive straight to the north shore while the lots are still open, then take the bridge photo on the way back out from the Yagaji side.

I’d also drop the Ocean Tower from a default plan. It’s a reasonable ¥1,000 if the weather is grey or you’re travelling with kids who like the cart ride, but it competes for the same 90 minutes as the actual coastline.

And I’d stop pairing Kouri with three other paid sites. Two anchors a day, maximum, north of Nago. The distances look small on a map and then Route 58 through Nago at 16:00 quietly eats 40 minutes of your evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time do you need on Kouri Island itself?

Three to four hours covers the bridge viewpoint, Tinu Beach and Heart Rock, one swim or walk, and lunch. The perimeter road is only about 8 km, so travel time between stops is a few minutes each. Anything beyond five hours means you’re sunbathing rather than sightseeing.

Is Kouri Bridge free to cross?

Yes. The 1,960-metre Kouri Bridge, opened in February 2005, carries no toll in either direction. Your only Kouri-related expense is parking, typically ¥300-500 at the beach lots.

Can you swim at Heart Rock?

Tinu Beach is a small cove better suited to photos than swimming, with no showers and no jellyfish net. For a proper swim with facilities, use Kouri Beach at the southern end by the bridge, which has shallow water, toilets and rental gear.

What’s the best month for a Kouri Island day trip?

Late April to mid-June gives warm water, decent light and fewer crowds than the August peak, and it sits before the heart of typhoon season. Late September and October are also strong once the summer holiday traffic clears. Avoid Golden Week and the mid-August Obon week if you can.
